The Rock Pile that Moved Itself

Sounds like a nursery rhyme. Or magical thinking. Or a fairy tale.

Because after a year of sitting in a heap at the end of the sidewalk, let's be real. That rock pile ain't gonna move itself.

For all my inspirational writing about starting. Beginning. Get a move on. I might need to give myself a kick in the pants.

I have been blatantly ignoring this pile. Dreaming it away. Creating excuses. It's too hot to move the rocks. It's raining. It's snowing. It's raining again. Ha.

Snow, really? Too hot? Good one.

The problem with ignored piles is that eventually you stop seeing them. They become part of the landscape. Your eyes sweep right past that pile as if it's become garden decor.

I like old stones and rocks as much as the next person. Okay, I like them more. But the problem is we aren't talking about an artistic sculpture. This is your common, everyday pile of rocks that got unloaded and has not moved for the past year.

Yes, I said year. As in 12 months. As in 52 weeks. Probably longer in reality.

I know I'm not the first person to leave a messy pile. Most people though are smart enough to have their piles hidden inside. Not me, I'd like all the neighbors and visitors to have a clear view.

Let's just put my indecisiveness on display for all.

Indecision is part of a club whose members include denial, procrastination, and avoidance. These guys trap you into believing that doing and deciding are unimportant. Hoping and wishing become the drink of choice. And believe me, you can hope all you want but that's not going to move a pile of rocks.

Sadly, indecision can be pervasive. It can seep into all areas of life. Big and small. Suddenly a pattern begins to develop. And probably fear comes along for the ride.

So, I've decided I really don't want to live my life paralyzed with indecision. Stagnant. Stuck.

Because honestly, when I don't make a decision I really am making one.

There are many things in life more important than a rock pile. Actually most things in life are more important. So what decisions am I putting off? What things require action. What can I do?

Time to decide. Take steps. Move forward. Do something.

What's the worst thing that can happen?

Today I moved the rock pile to the side of the house. And you know what? It feels so good.

What one pile will you move today?

Time to "get 'er done".
