No Looking Back

When I’m painting a face or figure I generally start with a reference image. A guide of sorts. Inspiration that opens the door.

If you were to view the reference image I imagine you would agree that my finished piece looks nothing like it. This is not only because I choose different colors and start on a textured background but because my intent is not to directly copy.

Although I paint intuitively I generally do not prescribe meaning to a finished piece.

However the painting in the video below is an exception. I felt she had an opinion. Head turned sideways. Eyes glancing back. Body facing forward.

For me the message was loud and clear.

Press onward.

Remember the past. Reflect. Reminisce even.

But life cannot be lived in hindsight. Chasing shadows. Reviewing the dead ends of “what if” or “what could’ve been”.

Living in the past cannot propel me into the future.

So, “no looking back” might sound harsh. But lived out in it’s truest sense it gives me the freedom to evolve. Rise up. Venture forward.

Onward.

Will you join me?

This is the season she will make beautiful things. Not perfect things but honest things that speak to who she is and who she knows she is meant to be.
