Small things that made my June just a little bit better.
exploring
Red is a color I do not reach for very often (or at all). In a moment of weakness, I challenged myself (plus I had an almost empty tube) to discover what results I could make. Watch the video and see for yourself.
reading
I have been revisiting Jane Davies book, Abstract Painting which provides a helpful understanding of basic principles on composition, color, and elements. Her art inspires me and her book is a valuable resource.
If I don’t have red, I use blue.

inspiring
This video gives a behind-the-scenes peek at landscape artist Simon Carter’s process. I’m always curious about what resonates and inspires other creatives.
baking
These Salted Oatmeal Cranberry Chocolate Chip Cookies are so delicious I promise you will have difficulty resisting a second (or third for that matter) especially when they are warm. The only change I make to the recipe is to substitute the chocolate chunks for chips because I generally have them on hand. In our family, these cookies have replaced the traditional chocolate chip cookie recipe of my childhood as an all-around favorite. Ina Garten yet again wins another trophy.
You can be miserable before you have a cookie, and you can be miserable after you eat a cookie, but you can’t be miserable while you are eating a cookie.

following
YouTube: Laura Horn’s art style and color palette are inspiring. I’ve also taken her art classes and enjoyed her podcast
Pinterest: Ines Hildur for her dark and moody boards
Instagram: Stephanie Lee who I have followed for years. Her art style and use of plaster inspire me to try new things.
The more grateful I am, the more beauty I see.

blooming
The Campanula (bellflowers) seem to glow against the green in the backyard bold and serene on their long legs. I can’t remember how many years ago I planted them but I’m always happy to see their enthusiastic blooms.

Sometimes the most obvious beauty is right outside your front door. It could be a path (for me yesterday), a sunset, a mountain, or a pond to name a few. Although I do realize Seattle is known for its natural beauty my hunch is that each of us could capture beauty if we spent a moment looking for it.
The moments when it’s the most difficult to be kind are the moments where it matters the most.
